Theth: Albania’s Most Famous Mountain Village
Located in the heart of the Albanian Alps, Theth is one of the country’s most spectacular destinations. Surrounded by towering peaks, waterfalls and hiking trails, it attracts visitors looking for nature, fresh mountain air and unforgettable views.
Some of the highlights include the Blue Eye of Theth, Grunas Waterfall and the famous Lock in Tower, all within easy reach of the village. If you enjoy hiking, Theth is also the starting point for the popular trail connecting it with Valbona.
Although it’s possible to visit Theth in a single day, we usually recommend spending at least one night. The scenery changes throughout the day, and the evenings are surprisingly peaceful once most day visitors have left.
The drive from Shkodër takes around two hours, while the journey from Tirana usually takes between four and five hours, depending on road conditions. The last section of the road is now much easier than it used to be, making Theth accessible for most travelers during the warmer months.
Lin: A Peaceful Village on Lake Ohrid
If you’re looking for a quieter destination away from Albania’s busiest tourist areas, Lin is an excellent choice. This small village sits on the shores of Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, offering beautiful waterfront views and a much slower pace of life.
One of the main attractions is the archaeological site with early Christian mosaics, but many visitors simply come to enjoy the lakeside promenade, fresh fish restaurants and peaceful atmosphere.
Lin is also a great stop if you’re driving between Tirana and North Macedonia. The journey from Tirana takes around three hours, making it an easy day trip or a relaxing overnight destination.

Dhërmi: A Coastal Village with Incredible Sea Views

The drive from Tirana takes around three and a half to four hours, depending on traffic and the season. Many travelers also combine Dhërmi with nearby destinations such as Himarë, Vuno or Jale Beach, making it an excellent base for exploring the southern coast.
From our experience, visiting the old village early in the morning or close to sunset offers the best views and a much quieter atmosphere than during the busiest hours of the day.
Vuno: One of Albania’s Hidden Gems
Perched on a hillside between Dhërmi and Himarë, Vuno is one of those places that many travelers drive past without realizing what they’re missing. The village is known for its traditional stone houses, quiet streets and panoramic views stretching across the Ionian Sea.
Unlike some of the more popular destinations along the Albanian Riviera, Vuno has managed to preserve its authentic character. Walking through the village feels like stepping back in time, with narrow cobbled streets, old churches and beautifully restored homes.
Vuno is also just a short drive from Jale Beach and Gjipe Beach, making it an ideal stop if you’re exploring the southern coastline. Even if you only spend an hour or two here, the peaceful atmosphere is a welcome break from the busy beaches during the summer months.
Qeparo: A Traditional Village Above the Sea
Qeparo is another beautiful village located along the Albanian Riviera, offering a completely different experience from the nearby beach resorts.
The historic upper village is filled with centuries-old stone houses, olive trees and narrow streets that reward visitors with impressive views of the Ionian Sea. Down the hill, you’ll find the newer part of Qeparo with a small beach and several restaurants, making it easy to combine sightseeing with a relaxing afternoon by the water.

How to Reach Albania’s Most Beautiful Villages
One thing many first-time visitors quickly notice is that reaching Albania’s smaller villages often requires a bit of planning. While buses and minibuses connect many towns across the country, schedules can be limited, especially outside the summer season.
Some villages, such as Theth, Lin or Qeparo, may also require changing buses along the way, which can make the journey longer than expected.
