Sometimes it’s driving along a spectacular coastline, stopping because you’ve found a view you weren’t expecting and staying at the beach until the sun disappears.

Albania gives couples plenty of opportunities for exactly that kind of trip.

The country is compact enough that you can experience several very different places without needing multiple flights or complicated connections. Tirana gives you restaurants, nightlife and urban energy. Berat offers history, traditional architecture and wineries. Head south and the scenery changes completely as the mountains meet the Ionian Sea.

Then there are the small moments.

Coffee in a quiet square. Sharing several Albanian dishes because neither of you knows what to order. Finding a beach that wasn’t originally on the itinerary. Stopping at Llogara Pass because the view is too good to simply drive past.

From our experience, couples often enjoy Albania most when they don’t overplan it.

Choose a few places you really want to experience and leave some space between them. Trying to fit Tirana, Berat, Vlore, Dhërmi, Himarë, Saranda and Ksamil into a few days can quickly turn a romantic trip into a race between hotel check-ins.

Your holiday also starts the moment you land. Arranging a taxi from tirana airport in advance means you can leave the airport together, go directly to your accommodation and start enjoying the trip without having to work out transportation after the flight.

Save the planning energy for deciding where you’re having dinner.

Start with Tirana: Rooftops, Great Food and a Night in Blloku

Don’t make the mistake of treating Tirana simply as the place where your flight lands.

For couples, we’d give the capital at least one full day and one evening.

Start somewhere around Skanderbeg Square and explore the centre on foot. Tirana is a city that works particularly well when you aren’t rushing between attractions. Stop for coffee, wander through the streets around the centre and give yourselves time to experience the café culture that is such a big part of everyday life in Albania.

If the weather is good, consider spending part of the afternoon at Dajti Mountain. The Dajti Ekspres cable car takes you away from the traffic and gives you panoramic views across Tirana and the surrounding landscape.

Then come back down before dinner.

This is when Blloku becomes the obvious destination.

The neighbourhood is filled with restaurants, cafés, cocktail bars and places where you can easily move from dinner to drinks without planning the entire evening in advance.

We’d start with Albanian food.

Instead of ordering two separate main courses, choose several dishes for the table and share them. Try something traditional, order something you’ve never heard of and don’t worry too much about getting everything right.

After dinner, find a rooftop or cocktail bar and let the evening continue from there.

If you’re both planning to have a few drinks, using taxi services in Tirana also means nobody has to think about driving back to the hotel later.

Berat: Wine, History and One of Albania’s Most Romantic Escapes

If we had to recommend one cultural destination for couples visiting Albania for the first time, Berat would be very high on the list.

The city feels completely different from Tirana.

Traditional white houses climb the hillsides above the Osum River, narrow streets run through the historic neighbourhoods, and Berat Castle overlooks the city from above. It is the kind of place where walking without a strict itinerary is often more enjoyable than trying to tick off attractions one after another.

Start with the historic neighbourhoods before heading towards the castle.

Berat Castle isn’t simply an isolated monument. The fortified area contains churches, traditional homes, viewpoints and streets that still feel connected to everyday life. Give yourselves enough time to explore rather than arriving only for a photograph and leaving again.

Then slow the day down.

Find somewhere serving traditional Albanian food and have a proper lunch. Berat is not the place we’d recommend rushing through between two other destinations.

And if you both enjoy wine, stay longer.

The area surrounding Berat is home to wineries producing Albanian wines alongside more familiar international varieties. A tasting gives you an opportunity to discover another side of the country and turns a simple sightseeing day into something much more memorable.

For couples starting from the capital, booking a taxi from Tirana to Berat also solves one very practical problem: if both of you want to enjoy the wine tasting, neither of you needs to be the designated driver.

You can also take the experience one step further and spend the night.

Choose a traditional guesthouse or boutique accommodation in the historic part of the city, have dinner after the day visitors have left and experience Berat at a much slower pace.

Albania for Two: The Perfect Trip for Couples

Find Your Place on the Albanian Riviera

After Tirana and Berat, it’s time to head towards the coast.

And this is where we’d avoid giving every couple the same recommendation.

The Albanian Riviera isn’t one single type of destination. Dhërmi, Himarë, Saranda and Ksamil offer very different experiences, so the best place to stay depends on what the two of you actually want from the trip.

If you’re travelling south from central Albania, Vlore is where the journey towards the Riviera really begins. Travelling by taxi from tirana to Vlore allows you to reach the coast comfortably before continuing towards Llogara Pass and the smaller destinations further south.

Don’t rush this part of the journey.

The road through Llogara is one of those occasions when getting somewhere is almost as memorable as the destination itself. Stop at a viewpoint, take your time and enjoy the first views of the Ionian coastline before descending towards the Riviera.

Dhërmi: For Beaches, Style and a Livelier Atmosphere

Dhërmi is a good choice if you want beautiful water and a more energetic summer atmosphere.

During peak season, the area attracts visitors for its beaches, restaurants, beach bars and events. You can spend the afternoon swimming, stay for sunset and continue the evening without needing an elaborate plan.

For couples who like their romantic getaway with a little nightlife mixed in, Dhërmi makes sense.

Himarë: For a Slower Riviera Experience

If we were choosing somewhere to spend several nights rather than constantly changing hotels, Himarë would be one of our strongest options.

It has enough restaurants and activity to keep evenings interesting while providing easy access to several beaches and boat trips.

You can spend one day doing almost nothing, then use the next to explore the coastline.

Livadhi, Jalë and other nearby beaches give you options without requiring another hotel check-in every evening.

Gjipe: For the Adventurous Couple

Gjipe is for the day when both of you are willing to put in a little more effort.

The dramatic canyon and beach create a completely different atmosphere from the more developed coastal destinations. Access requires more planning than simply walking out of a seaside hotel, but that’s part of the appeal.

Bring water, proper footwear and don’t treat it like an urban beach.

Saranda: For Restaurants, Evenings Out and a Convenient Base

Saranda works well for couples who want the sea during the day but still prefer having plenty of restaurants, accommodation and evening activity nearby.

The waterfront is particularly enjoyable around sunset, when you can walk along the promenade before finding somewhere for dinner.

It also works well as a base for exploring southern Albania rather than moving your luggage every morning.

Ksamil: For the Water

There’s a reason Ksamil appears in so many photographs of Albania.

The clear water, small islands and beaches make it one of the country’s most recognisable summer destinations.

But we’d approach it differently depending on when you visit.

During the busiest summer weeks, Ksamil can become extremely crowded. If you’re looking for a quiet romantic escape in July or August, spending the entire trip there may not match the peaceful images you’ve seen online.

Instead, consider visiting for the day while staying somewhere nearby, particularly if you also want restaurants, nightlife and easier access to other attractions.

And wherever you stay, give yourselves one evening with absolutely nothing planned.

Find somewhere overlooking the sea, order dinner and stay for sunset.

Not every memorable travel experience needs a reservation.

The Perfect 7-Day Albania Itinerary for Two

One week is enough to combine city life, history, wine and the Riviera, but only if you accept that you won’t see everything.

Here’s how we’d plan it.

Days 1 and 2: Tirana

Use your first day to settle in and explore the centre without rushing.

Coffee, Skanderbeg Square, a walk through the city and dinner around Blloku is more than enough after travelling.

On the second day, explore more of Tirana or head towards Dajti Mountain before returning for your final evening in the capital.

Don’t schedule an early departure the morning after a late night in Blloku. You’re travelling as a couple, not competing in a rally.

Day 3: Berat

Leave Tirana and head towards Berat.

Explore the historic neighbourhoods and castle, have a long lunch and consider booking a wine tasting during the afternoon.

You have two good options afterward.

Continue towards the coast if you want to maximise your Riviera time, or spend the night in Berat if you’d rather experience the city after most day visitors have left.

For a romantic trip, we’d lean towards the second option.

Day 4: Vlore, Llogara Pass and the Riviera

Now the landscape changes.

Travel towards Vlore and continue south through Llogara Pass.

This isn’t a day when we’d recommend simply driving from one hotel to another. Stop for lunch, enjoy the viewpoints and let the journey take longer than Google Maps says it should.

End the day somewhere around Himarë.

Day 5: Beaches and a Boat Trip

Don’t get back into a car unless you need to.

Spend the morning at the beach and use the afternoon for a boat trip if weather and sea conditions allow.

A private boat can be particularly worthwhile for couples who want more flexibility, but shared excursions are also available from several Riviera destinations.

If you can find a sunset departure, even better.

Day 6: Saranda and Ksamil

Continue south and use Saranda as your base.

Spend part of the day around Ksamil, swim, explore the coastline and return to Saranda later in the afternoon.

For your final proper evening on the coast, keep things simple.

Walk along the waterfront, choose somewhere for dinner and stay out for a drink afterward.

Day 7: Butrint and the Journey Back

If your schedule allows, visit Butrint before travelling north.

The UNESCO World Heritage site provides a completely different final experience after several days dominated by beaches and the coast.

Just be realistic about your flight.

We regularly see travellers underestimate how long journeys through Albania can take during busy periods. If you’re flying home early the following morning, we’d rather spend the final night closer to Tirana than turn the last day of a romantic holiday into a race against the departure board.

Make It a Little More Romantic

You don’t need an expensive resort to make the trip feel special.

Book the traditional guesthouse in Berat.

Have lunch at a winery instead of rushing to the next attraction.

Stop at Llogara even if it adds time to the journey.

Take a sunset boat trip.

Choose one evening when neither of you looks at the itinerary.

And when you find somewhere you both love, stay another hour.

The perfect seven-day itinerary isn’t necessarily the one you follow exactly.
